Histamine Intolerance is a hormonally linked condition. It often worsens at the peri-menopause.
It is characterised by an allergic reaction to foods, particularly histamine rich food such as alcohol, certain meats, some fruits and vegetables and cheese.
Rash, itch, hives (urticaria), fatigue, headaches can all be symptoms.
Despite the trigger being low oestrogen at menopause, treating with HRT can make it worse.
Treatment involves, a low histamine diet, careful use of HRT if indicated, antihistamines and mast cell stabilisers.
