Testosterone Replacement for Women

Women lose testosterone gradually each year as they enter perimenopause. There is strong evidence which suggests testosterone helps to support libido, and some evidence that it can improve symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog as well as reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Testosterone Replacement for Women

Testosterone is a critical hormone for women. Testosterone helps with bone density, mood, energy levels, sexual function and maintaining bone and muscle strength. As we age, our testosterone levels fall naturally. This can cause women to be left with symptoms such as low libido, low mood and feeling tired all the time. The first line treatment for hormonal symptoms in women as we age is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which contains oestrogen, and progesterone if you have a womb. Only if you are taking HRT and you continue to have certain symptoms would testosterone replacement then be considered.

In the UK, the guidelines only refer to testosterone treatment being recommended when women have persistent struggles with low libido after starting HRT and finding the right dose. Testosterone for women is prescribed off license, meaning that it is important to see an expert who can prescribe and monitor you effectively.
